Essence of What Was
25 02 2007Sometimes an event can become much more in a memory than it ever was in reality. Thinking back on things that have happened in my life, they glow more luminuously than they did as I was living them. Life has a way of polishing away the rough edges of itself, leaving nothing but the glowing reminders of joy. I like to write from that place, overlooking the valley of those glowing memories, while pretending that they really shined as brightly then as they do now.
Essence of What Was
The essence of your scent awakens me gently, just as the sun peeks through the window. Last night we caressed in such a way that left no doubt as to our feelings. The clouds of passion lifted, only the veil of our union remains, and such a union it is. I anxiously shift in bed, a jolt of nervous energy shooting down my spine, tickling me to laughter. Just then a flash – our naked bodies touching, you yielding to my presence, bending under my kisses to your lower back, moaning softly under your breath as I slowly slide down, wet lips leaving sweet love at every spot, until your joy rises, begins to flow, change, grow, inside you the feelings mount, but then I recede, with a slight smirk on my face I look into your eyes, you’re caught somewhere between ecstasy and bemusement. A wrinkle comes across your face as you turn to lie on your back, but before you can express the thought, I’ve submerged again, floating in the bliss of your joy, you arch your back as you grab my ears, holding on for dear life. Your emotions crest, no hiding your happiness now, it’s gone too far to stop, your joy explodes, as you grab the pillow and press your face deep into it. I know I’ve touched you, and I quietly rejoice in my triumph. You pull me up toward you and kiss my cheek, then my forehead. Then we intertwine into a jumbled mass of arms and legs, holding each other tightly as we drift off to sleep – and then it’s gone. I know you’ve touched me deeply, but you’re in a different place now, running around the house, getting your little boy ready to go, trying to conquer the world one second at a time. You’re stuffing breakfast into your mouth, keeping two eyes on your child without once running into anything or stubbing your toes.
You control all around you, and yet, at one point you glance at me, and your calm demeanor reflects the truth – you love me more than you’re willing to say, and in response my look reciprocates your feelings. But, my dear, that’s for another day. Today, we’ll dance together on crystal clear water, tomorrow we’ll build our dreams, one vision at a time.
Did this really happen? Only I know for sure, and I ain’t tellin’. But I’d like to believe, that even if it didn’t happen, that it could and will (again?).
